More about our candles...
Palm is a very hard, long lasting wax, and will emit a clean, bright light when lit. As with all candles, please keep your wick trimmed to 1/4” and burn your candle on a flat, heat-safe surface away from drafts. Your first burn is called a memory burn and we recommend a three to four hour burn. It will likely take three or more burns before the wax pool extends to the sides of the glass container. This is normal for palm wax. Total burn time is about 40 hours if the wick is properly trimmed.
Why palm wax?
We love beeswax, and have enjoyed making and burning beeswax candles for years. We wanted to create a candle using a sustainable, natural wax that could carry our fragrances. Unlike beeswax, palm wax offers excellent hot and cold fragrance throw. Plus, we love the sparkly crystalline nature of the wax!
Why not soy?
Soy wax is very popular, but many of our customers prefer to avoid soy for a number of reasons. When researching other natural wax options we learned that many petrochemicals are used to farm, distill, and process soy wax. Palm wax is steam distilled, and doesn’t require the use of chemicals in farming or processing.
Soy plants, including those grown in the US, are generally genetically modified, and require intensive annual planting and tilling. Palm is a non-GMO tree that lives for 25+ years, setting fruit 6-12 times a year. It is a rapidly renewable resource. Acre to acre, palm trees produce 10 times more oil than any other oil-producing crop, including soybeans.
But is palm really sustainable? I’ve read about rain forest deforestation.
It is true that the palm and timber industries have caused serious degradation in parts of Asia. Orangutan habitat was lost, and rainforests were plowed or burned. However, in 2003, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was formed and established standards to promote sustainable farming practices, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. The demand for sustainable palm worldwide is increasing, and the situation is improving. All of the palm we use—whether for our soaps or our candles—comes from RSPO plantations and mills, and is RSPO certified and organic.
