Badger hair is a traditional favorite for shaving brushes, and is often considered to be the best fiber for shaving because of its ability to hold a good amount of water. Water is the most important element to achieving the perfect lather and a close shave. Badger hair maximizes the effect of water on your skin and hair.
Badger is typically sorted into four grades: pure badger, best badger, super badger, and silvertip badger. Pure badger hair is gathered from underbelly hair that covers about 60% of the badger's body. Individual hairs are coarser than other badger grades and offer a little more "scritch". Some wet shavers prefer this grade because of the stiffer backbone and exfoliation offered.
